When asked by a British officer how Francis Marion and his men were such a formidable opponent to the British army Marion responded, “When the heart is deeply stirred a man can do anything.” I can hear in Marion’s statement echoes of Solomon’s words that speak of the heart as the wellspring of life (Prov. 4:23). Unfortunately, all too often we live with a heart of indifference and apathy simply going through the motions in hopes that someday our heart will be revived with the passion we once carried in our youth. Appropriately captured in The Wizard of Oz, Tinman considers the greatest loss to be experienced is the “loss of the heart”.
