Cornerstone Kids Baptism

At Cornerstone Kids, we encourage and give opportunities for children to respond in obedience to Jesus as they follow Him. Our children are encouraged to not just learn about Jesus but to learn from Jesus by walking with Him every day. Just as Jesus was baptized, we encourage children who have put their faith and trust in Christ to follow Him in believer’s baptism.

If your child wants to be baptized, please set up a time for them (and you!) to meet with one of our pastors by calling the church office at 843-395-1370.

Baptism Devotional

Is my child ready to be baptized?

Our desire is for parents to lead their children in conversations about baptism and disciple them toward this important step of obedience in the life of every believer. We advise parents to wait until their child is asking to be baptized (not just an inquiry, but a persistent desire) before setting up a baptism meeting. This is usually a good indication that they are ready to be baptized and it is a spiritual milestone in their life. While younger children under the age of 5 can have a relationship with Jesus, they will not necessarily remember or understand the significance of the baptism event, so we encourage parents to wait until they are a little older before they are baptized.

As you discern if your child is ready to be water baptized, here are some questions to ask your child:

  1. Why do you want to be water baptized?
    • Answers that indicate your child understands:
      • Because Jesus was and He tells us to also; Because I trust in Jesus and I want to be obedient and follow Him.
      • Baptism is an example of Jesus’ obedience. Jesus said, “it is proper for us to do so to fulfill righteousness” (Matthew 3:15).
  2. What does it mean to be water baptized?
    • Answers that indicate your child understands:
      • It means I’m following Jesus; It means I’m a Christian and I want to show the world; It’s a picture of what Jesus has done on the inside of me.
  3. What is the Gospel?
    • At Cornerstone Kids, we present the Gospel in this way:
  4. When did you respond to Jesus and become saved?
    • Answers that indicate your child understands:
      • Your child should have a specific memory of when he/she understood what Jesus did for them and that they made Jesus the King of their life. It may have been at church, at home, or even sometime when he was alone. It is important to distinguish a time that it happened.

If your child is ready to be baptized:

Schedule a baptism meeting for you and your child to meet with one of our staff pastors. We encourage you to go through our Cornerstone Kids Baptism Devotional with your child to help deepen their understanding of water baptism and feel prepared to talk about it. (Physical copies are available on the Elementary resource wall in the check-in area.) You can schedule your meeting by calling the church office at 843-395-1370.

If your child is NOT ready to be baptized:

If you don’t feel your child understands what it means to be water baptized, it’s totally appropriate to wait. Remember, water baptism does not save–that is done at salvation. During this time, let your child observe water baptism and talk to them about what it means.
